SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 36

Commemorating the passing of C. H. "Jackie" McKown, sports star, community leader, statesman and distinguished former member of the West Virginia Senate.

Whereas, C. H. "Jackie" McKown was born October 10, 1907, at Ripley, West Virginia, and died October 9, 1997, at the age of eighty-nine; and
Whereas, "Jackie" McKown captained the Marshall College basketball team in 1928 as well as serving as president of his senior class and also played football and baseball; and
Whereas, "Jackie" McKown served as athletic business manager at Marshall, was a founding member of the Marshall Foundation and was elected to the Marshall Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, "Jackie" McKown was a Mason and Shriner and was a member, BPOE, American Business Club, Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Alpha and served as the Chairman of the Wayne County Democratic Executive Committee; and
Whereas, "Jackie" McKown was an educator who served as a teacher, coach and principal at Wayne County High School; and
Whereas, "Jackie" McKown had a distinguished legislative career in which he served as a sSenator from Wayne County for thirty years, was Chairman of the Senate Education Committee for twenty-two years, and Chairman of the Finance Committee for two years; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That regret is hereby expressed by the members at the passing of C. H. "Jackie" McKown, athlete, educator, community leader and a long and distinguished member of the West VirginiaState Senate; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to his son, Dr. Charles H. McKown, Jr., of Huntington and his granddaughter, Dr. Sherwin McKown, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
